Celebrate the spookiest season this month with a Pumpkin Decorating Contest, the Westchester/PDR Spooktacular, a community photo booooooth and a Great Pumpkin-themed caravan

Halloween may look a little different this year, but community members have come together to create fun, reimagined Halloween experiences for local kids and the community!

Share your decorated pumpkins for a chance to win our first Pumpkin Decorating Contest!

The HomeTown News and the Stephanie Younger Group have teamed up this month to host two fun, family-friendly contests just in time for Halloween!

First up, make sure to carve out some time this month to participate in the Hometown Halloween Pumpkin Decorating Contest! Pick out the perfect pumpkin and get creative as you decorate, carve or paint your jack -o’-lantern to create a ghoulish design that is scary, silly or unique!

Community members can enter the contest by emailing a photo of their spooktacular creation to westchesterhometown@yahoo.com. Please include your name, age category, address and phone number. While voting starts October 27th, you can still participate through October 30th at noon by emailing your photos.

All of the photos received will be uploaded to our virtual pumpkin patch at facebook.com/thehtn where the community can vote for their favorites in the following categories: Elementary School (K-5); Middle School (6-8); High School (9-12); Adult (18+); and Family entry. Voting will take place October 27 through October 30 at 11:59 PM. The entry with the most likes in each of the five categories will receive a $50 gift card to The Book Jewel courtesy of the Stephanie Younger Group! The winners will be announced on the HomeTown News and the Stephanie Younger Group’s social media pages on Halloween.

Share your Halloween costume photos through November 1st to enter the contest.

No matter what your Halloween plans are this year, we want to see your costumes! Share your photos on social media to enter a Hometown Halloween Costume Contest! To participate, post a photo on your Facebook or Instagram page by November 1st at noon.

For photos posted on Instagram, follow and tag @thehometownnews and @stephanieyoungergroup and use the hashtag #htnhalloween and #syghalloween.

For photos posted on Facebook, follow and tag @thehtn and @stephanieyounger and use the hashtag #htnhalloween and #syghalloween.

Three winners will be chosen at random on the week of November 2 and will receive a $50 gift card courtesy of the Stephanie Younger Group.

Submissions will be featured in an online photo gallery and some of our favorites will be featured in the November edition of the HomeTown News!

Contest Rules
  1. The contests are open to Westchester, Playa del Rey, Playa Vista or Marina del Rey residents of all ages and students who attend schools in these areas.
  2. Participants under the age of 18 must have permission from a parent/legal guardian and have entry submitted by parents.
  3. You may only submit 1 entry per contest, per individual.
  4. Pumpkin Decorating: Pumpkin must be decorated this year and the entry can either include just the pumpkin or the participant holding their pumpkin. If your school and/or organization is holding a Pumpkin Decorating Contest, you can also use that entry for this contest, just please send an original photo.

By submitting your photos, the HomeTown News and the Stephanie Younger Group may use the photos in print and online. Any entry deemed not suitable for consideration due to objectionable content may be rejected.

Westchester/PDR Halloween Spooktacular & Virtual Photo Booth on Saturday, October 31 | 11 am – 3 pm scavenger hunt | 4 – 7 pm YMCA CARnival
Stop by 20+ decorated homes on the Westchester/PDR Halloween Spooktacular scavenger hunt list.

Community members led by organizer and Westchester resident, Alicia Hood, are hosting a Westchester/Playa del Rey Halloween Spooktacular featuring a community scavenger hunt and CARnival at the Westchester Family YMCA.

While the YMCA CARnival is sold out, those interested in participating in the scavenger hunt are invited to email amd52001@gmail.com to receive the scavenger hunt map. The map features 20+ locations in Westchester and Playa del Rey decorated for Halloween with spine-chilling displays! Drive or walk by these homes (following Safer at Home guidelines) on Saturday, October 31 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. to view the decorations and locate each “scavenger hunt” item. Once you view the item–think giant spider or silly skeleton–check it off your list and head to the next location. Some of these locations will also have additional tricks and treats delivered by candy chutes!

If you were lucky enough to score a ticket to the YMCA’s CARnival, once you’ve visited all 20 locations the Y will host their event from 4 to 7 p.m. RSVPs required!

At the drive-through CARnival, guests will enjoy typical fair-type games that kids can play from the comfort of their family car and special entertainment. Don’t forget to wear your masks! Volunteers will be directing traffic and sanitizing items in-between cars. While supplies last, kids will also receive a goodie bag at the end of the event.

Share your frightfully fun photos from the day to the virtual photo booth by texting your pictures to (310) 893-5137 from noon to 4 p.m. The photo will be instantly sent back to you inserted into a pumpkin-filled, Halloween-themed backdrop and added to a community virtual photo booth!

With no carnival this year, Visitation is instead inviting the community to visit their campus starting October 25th to take a photo in their hauntingly fun Viz Photo Booooooth!

During the week before Halloween, the campus will be open from 7:45 a.m. to 6 p.m. for families to visit in costume and take a selfie in front of parent-created photo backdrops with themes like Dia del los Muertos and more. Share your pictures and the fun by uploading them to social media using #vizphotobooooooth (six O’s!) and #visitationschoolla.

Visitation is located at  8740 Emerson Ave. in Westchester.

The Haunting of Hannon Library on Friday, October 16 | 9 pm – 10:30 pm

While Loyola Marymount University’s Hannon Library has sat largely empty this year, it’s digital archives are ready to come alive in a haunting 2020 edition of the Haunting of Hannon Library.

Join the university’s Theater Arts students as they stream live on Zoom “for a virtual exploration of what happens when you ‘access’ online collections and open the door to the other side.”

Trick Or Trash Beach Cleanup on Saturday, October 31 | 10 am

Silicon Beach Social (SBS) and C-Street Surf are joining forces for a TRICK or TRASH beach cleanup scheduled to take place on Saturday, October 31. SBS, a philanthropic and social group in Playa del Rey, is celebrating Halloween by encouraging the community to pick up trash instead of treats. They are hoping to make the beach scene less “scary.”

Participants are invited to celebrate Halloween in costume and help cleanup Toes Beach and support local restaurants in their area.

The event will kick off at 10 a.m. on Halloween. Participants are encouraged to start the day by supporting local businesses and purchasing a beverage of choice at meet-up location Playa Provisions, located on 119 Culver Blvd. Following the event, participants are invited to join a no-host lunch at a local favorite, The Shack.

Silicon Beach Social was founded in the spirit of providing social opportunities for social good for the local community.

Social distance protocols will be adhered to and gloves and trash bags will be provided.

The Great Pumpkin Caravan on Saturday, October 31 | 4 pm – 5 pm
The Great Pumpkin Caravan will make its way through Westchester and Playa del Rey on Halloween.

The Playa Venice Sunrise Rotary Club is celebrating Halloween with a Great Pumpkin Caravan. The caravan will feature Rotarians dressed up as Peanuts characters, including favorites Snoopy, Charlie Brown, Peppermint Patty and more.

The group will start in Playa del Rey and will wind its way through streets in PDR and Westchester. Organizers say the caravan will last about an hour and residents can expect to see more than 10 spooky decorated cars, fun surprises, and of course, a huge Great Pumpkin! 

The caravan’s route will be released on October 29th via playavenice.org
